When you report a claim, your insurer will often suggest a shop from its network. It sounds convenient, and sometimes it is. Here’s what that relationship means, so you can decide.
What “preferred” means
A preferred or direct repair program (DRP) shop has a contract with the insurance company. The contract usually covers labor rates, parts choices, rental days, and how fast the shop must finish. In exchange, the insurer sends the shop work.
What to ask any shop
- Do you follow the manufacturer’s published repair procedures for my vehicle?
- Will you scan my vehicle before and after the repair, and give me the reports?
- What parts are on my estimate, and what does my manufacturer recommend?
- Who do you answer to, me or the insurance company?
Your choice is protected
In Ohio, your insurer can recommend a shop but can’t require you to use one. Your rights in Ohio.
