Understanding your repair

OEM vs. aftermarket parts. OEM parts come from the company that built your vehicle. Aftermarket parts come from third parties and may not match for fit, finish, or safety.

Pre- and post-repair scanning. Scans find hidden electronic damage and confirm systems work afterward. Nearly every manufacturer requires them after a collision. More on scanning and calibration.

ADAS calibration. Cameras and radar that brake and steer for you must be recalibrated after many repairs.

Diminished value. Even after a flawless repair, a vehicle with an accident history is usually worth less. If another driver caused the accident, you may be able to claim that loss.

What to say when

When the insurer…You can say…
Steers you to their shop“I’ve chosen my repair facility.”
Writes non-OEM or used parts“I want parts that meet my manufacturer’s specifications. Please show me what my policy says.”
Leaves off scans or calibration“These are required by my vehicle’s manufacturer. The shop will send the documentation.”
Offers a low total loss value“Please send me the comparable vehicles you used. I’d like to review them before I respond.”
